 READING
As part of our reading I require students to have a chapter book that they are reading independently at all times. The books will be at their lexile level as determined by the most recent MAP test and/or my choice. They must check the book with me prior to reading it. When they are finished with a book they will then do a book report.  I have set a goal for the number of pages read.  Pages will be counted once the book report is completed.  This will be part of their reading grade.  This reading will come from free time both at home and at school.  They should be reading the book by themselves and not having it read aloud to them.  The guidelines for the first quarter are:
        Grade            Pages
1                     500 or more
2                     451-500
3                     400-450
4                     below 400

I believe that reading is much like baseball, dance, wrestling, playing piano, and many other things we practice, we only get better by doing it!
Research proves that daily reading practice helps students improve fluency, increase vocabulary and context skills, and provide practice for reading strategies taught in the classroom. Reading is not only an essential academic skill, necessary for learning in science, math, and social studies; it is an essential life skill in modern American society.
