I have taught at Kalona Elementary since 1988. I taught second grade for twelve years and then transferred to fourth grade. I have my undergraduate degree from Buena Vista College and my MA from the University of Iowa. I love teaching especially when I see students who learn to love reading!
I am married to my high school sweetheart, Bud. Bud is lead custodian at the high school. We have four children. Our oldest is Trilby (Mike) Owens. They have our three oldest grandsons--Payton, 10, a fifth grader, Cael, 7, a second grader, and Nate, 4, a preschooler. Trilby works at Williamsburg High School, and Mike farms and works at Whirlpool. They live in rural Homestead and the boys attend school in Williamsburg. Travis (Kerry) lives in rural Preston. They have a son, Chance, 2, and are expecting another son in December. Travis raises cattle and works at Lyondell. Kerry is a PA for an insurance company based out of Preston. Tasha (Kyle) Gingerich lives in rural Wellman. They have our only granddaughter, Clara, 14 months. Tasha works at University Hospitals, and Kyle is a mechanic at Capper Ford in Williamsburg. Trina (Tanner) Roos lives in Cedar Rapids. They have a son, Grayson, 18 months. Trina is a director at Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and Tanner is a PE teacher in the Cedar Rapids School District.
I enjoy reading, sewing, camping, and spending time with my family.
Welcome to 4Y! This is my 15th year teaching at KE, the first 11 being in 1st grade. I am originally from St. Louis, MO and lived in Chicago, IL during high school. I moved to Kalona after graduating from the University of Iowa with my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. While I bleed black and gold, I do occasionally add purple to the mix as I have my Master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Northern Iowa. I live in town with my husband, Lonnie, and our children, Jackson and Alison. Jackson is a sophmore and Alison is at the Middle School.
When I am not at school, I enjoy reading, writing (a short story I wrote was published last year...yeah!), spending time with family, eating, and napping. However, my children's sports schedules do not allow me much time at home! I am still trying to find a way to be comfortable on bleachers!
